The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has a new interim chancellor. Michael Lovell, Dean of UW-M’s College of Engineering and Applied Science, will step into the chancellor’s role on the second largest UW campus next month, following the departure of Carlos Santiago. UW System President Kevin Reilly announced the appointment of Lovell on Friday, and said he’ll provide strong leadership for UW-M at a critical time.

In addition to providing daily leadership for the 30,000-student campus, Lovell will be responsible for academic initiatives and major building projects. He will also serve as UW-Milwaukee’s chief advocate during the upcoming State budget-making process.

Santiago announced in August that he’ll become CEO of the Hispanic College Fund, a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC. Santiago has served as UW-M’s leader since July 2004, spearheading a renewed emphasis on the institution’s research mission. A national search for the next chancellor will aim to have a permanent leader in place next summer.
