Progress is being made in efforts to address concerns about University of Wisconsin System personnel policies and practices. An audit released earlier this year was critical of the UW System for the abuse of back-up positions, consultant fees, and lax reporting of sick days. System President Kevin Reilly says work is underway to address those problems. Reilly says they expect to have a clear plan in place by next summer. A special committee has been formed to deal with several issues brought up in the state audit.

Reilly appeared before a legislative committee on Wednesday to discuss the audit. While he says they're willing to work on those concerns, some things need to be preserved to keep UW hiring practices competitive. Reilly says potential employees are smart about picking a university that offers the right benefits to them and their family.

Reilly's appearance comes at a time when lawmakers are also facing criticism for the potential abuse of sick leave benefits. Audit Committee co-chair Carol Roessler says that should give them some insight into the UW's problems as they review any potential solutions.
