Campus officials say a noose found at U-W Stevens Point this month was not racially motivated. The noose was found a week ago hanging from a ceiling inside the Dreyfus University Center which is under construction. University spokesman Stephen Ward understands that some may have seen the noose as a sign of racial hatred following the Jena Six protests in Louisiana and similar noose incidents at other colleges, but it's believed the noose was likely used as a hand or foot-grab by construction workers.

The university's protective services department has concluded, but not closed, its investigation in case any additional information comes forward. Campus investigators met with the Portage County district attorney's office to discuss they case, but prosecutors agreed no further investigation was necessary.
