Wisconsin’s Attorney General has decided not to seek a third term in office.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says he is proud of his accomplishments while serving as the state’s top law enforcement officer, but believes it’s time to give Wisconsin voters new choices. Van Hollen says he has managed to accomplish many of the goals he set when he first took office seven years ago, and he hopes that not having worry about a campaign for the next 13 months will allow him to focus on his remaining objectives before leaving office.

Van Hollen, a Republican, was first elected in 2006 and reelected in 2010. During that time, he eliminated a massive backlog in DNA testing at state crime labs, expanded efforts to fight internet crimes targeting children, and oversaw implementation of the state’s concealed carry permit system.

Van Hollen says he has put public safety first and is proud of his accomplishments, and “will remain deeply committed to the Department of Justice’s mission and continuing our successes throughout the remainder of my term.”
