This Veterans Day the mission at the state Veterans Department continues to be about veterans.
Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos says regardless of which party is in the majority, and what happens in Iraq, his job remains the same … to serve the veterans. He says Wisconsin veterans can rest assured they'll be taken care of when they get home. "Our goal, our mission here at the Department is to make sure when these young men and women come home, that their benefits, their family members are treated with dignity and treated with respect and honor."
On this Veterans Day Scocos reminds us that Wisconsin is the nation's leader in taking care of veterans, with benefits such as the new Wisconsin G-I bill, loan programs and nursing facilities. This year's theme: Thankful Remembrance. "Every citizen should remember and reflect on Veterans Day of what veterans have done to allow them to continue their day-to-day activities."
Scocos says it's important to teach our young generation about the importance of the sacrifices our veterans have made for them. "We need to stress in the schools how important our veterans have been, and our history and the legacy of veterans — not promoting war, but the legacy of what veterans have done to continue democracy in this great country."
His office has put together a teacher's resource guide on Veterans Day. Scocos commends State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster , who is encouraging students to "get involved and actively show appreciation for the military men and women who have served their country."
Veterans Day ceremonies will take place throughout the state on Saturday, November 11th. Secretary Scocos will speak at the State Capitol Rotunda beginning at 10:00 a.m.
