Efforts in the Assembly to override three of the Governor's vetoes to the budget repair bill fall short.

Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch (R-West Salem) argued the vetoes were needed to protect school aid, SeniorCare, and the Transportation Fund from budget cuts. Republicans wanted to restore protections included in the budget repair bill approved earlier this much, which would have prevented or limited what the Governor could do with those funds. Huebsch says the state should be focused on cutting state spending, rather than dipping into those funds to pay for state government.

However, Minority Leader Jim Kreuser (D-Kenosha) argued the votes were just about political posturing. During debate on the floor Wednesday, he said the vote is just "one more chapter under the marble big top" of the "do-nothing Legislature."

Speaker Huebsch warned though that the Governor would not have made the vetoes if he wasn't planning to cut those areas.

The Assembly fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to override each of the Governor's vetoes.
