Two-hundred cows found dead in a central Wisconsin farm field appear to have died from a virus which attacked their internal organs. A veterinarian told the Portage County Sheriff’s Department that the animals likely died from the IBR/BVD virus. IBR stands for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis. BVD stands for bovine viral diarrhea.
Samples from the dead animals have been sent to Madison to confirm the diagnosis. The virus does not pose a threat to humans or other animals. The Humane Society 0f Portage County is investigating the cow deaths.
