A significant number of voter information mismatches were recently found while the Statewide Voter Registration System (SVRS) cross referenced Transportation Department records.

Last month the Government Accountability Board knocked down a request by the state GOP to require provisional ballots for citizens whose profile showed discrepancies. The request would have required those voters to come back to the clerk's office the next day with proof of residence. Kyle Richmond, spokesman for the Accountability Board, says with the extra step those votes run the risk of votes not being counted.

Last week the board defended its ruling by having staffers do a test run on its own panel which is made up of former judges. Four of the six members failed the initial cross check. Richmond says three of those were due to differences in names. For example one member goes by his middle name but is documented by first name.

Richmond suggests citizens use the exact same name and information when registering to vote that they've given to the DMV. In the case of a mismatch a clerk will have to double check the information and possibly contact that person.

Meantime voters throughout Wisconsin take to the polls for the primaries Tuesday.
