Governor Scott Walker has approved emergency measures related to the implementation of the Deer Trustee report by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
The rules will implement the primary proposals in a report from James Kroll, the deer trustee appointed by Governor Walker. They include the elimination of the Deer Management Units in favor of county-based management, putting together local advisory committees in each county to help evaluate herds for the DNR, and the elimination of in-person deer registration. In a press release, Governor Walker said that the rule changes will take the right approach to conservation and natural resource management so that Wisconsin’s traditions of deer hunting will continue to thrive for generations.
The registration changes have attracted criticism from tavern owners, who argue they will lose business with hunters no longer having to register their kills in person.
Walker made the announcement during a convention this weekend in Weston. The changes will be implemented for the start of the 2014 gun deer season.
