Governor Scott Walker wants to change the state’s voter ID law, so veterans can use their veterans ID. He says he’d like that to be in place for the April 5 election.
Walker says the Senate still has to take up the proposal, and he hopes that will happen in the next week or two. The governor says he’s already talked with Government Accountability Board staffers, so they know the change should be coming soon.
The issue of veterans IDs came up after the February primary. State Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley wrote a letter to the governor, because her 90-year-old uncle couldn’t vote using his veterans ID. She said the veteran of World War II’s Battle of Iwo Jima can use his veterans ID to get on an airplane.
The ID expansion is one provision in a bill that would change the registration system, and set an earlier deadline for returning absentee ballots.
Walker spoke in downtown Appleton Wednesday morning.
