A new poll shows Governor Scott Walker with a comfortable lead over his Democratic challenger. The latest Wisconsin Survey from St. Norbert College has Walker leading Democrat Mary Burke, with 56 percent support to Burke’s 40 percent. Walker was asked about the poll Wednesday in Middleton. “I’d rather be ahead then behind, but again the only poll that matters is the one on November 4th,” Walker said. He said he’d be announcing plans later this month to kick off his reelection campaign.

“In this survey we have more Republicans than Democrats, which is different,” said Dr. Wendy Scattergood, assistant professor of political science at St. Norbert College and associate at the Strategic Research Institute. “In this survey 37% identified as Republicans, 32% as Democrats and 25% as Independents. Wisconsin is truly a swing state and the way Independents lean is how the state will swing.”

Poll results also find that 97 percent of Republicans plan to vote for Walker, while 88 percent of Democrats intend to vote for Burke. Among independents, Walker leads 53 to 34 percent. The poll involved 401 adult Wisconsin residents who were questioned between March 24 and April 3. It has a margin of error of 5 percent. “In the end, I anticpate that this race willl tighten, just as races have in the past,” Walker said.
