While several Republicans have publicly said they would not support billionaire Donald Trump as the party’s presidential nominee, Governor Scott Walker is not quite ready to make that decision.
Asked by reporters in Madison Friday about whether he would back Trump if he’s the nominee, Walker said “that’s a long ways off. Votes are not going to be cast until the beginning of February. There’s a lot that will happen between now and then.”
The governor has previously voiced opposition to having Trump as the party’s nominee. When he dropped out of the presidential race earlier this year, Walker called on other candidates to follow suit so a more conservative voice could take the lead. While he did not mentioned Trump by name at the time, Walker said it was “fundamentally important” that voters have a “positive conservative alternative to the current frontrunner.”
Walker earlier this week also took issue with Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the United States, saying it runs counter to a “founding principle” of this country.
