Governor Scott Walker reacts to news that the state Department of Natural Resources killed a fawn at the very place it was taken to be protected. Armed officials raided a no-kill shelter and euthanized “Giggles” to prevent the spread of disease.
Governor Walker says it’s worth reexamining current policy. “Earlier today I ordered a number of cabinet members to come in and put together a policy,” he says, “My charge was to them, going forward, I don’t ever want to see something like that again.”
It’s against Wisconsin law for individuals to keep wild animals without a permit. Wild animals pose a danger to humans and have a potential for disease.
Walker doesn’t yet know exactly how policy will change to prevent another incident like the one that occurred on July 15th. “I’m willing to look at what options they give me.”
An Illinois family brought the fawn to the Society of St. Francis Animal Shelter until she could be relocated to a wildlife reserve. Giggles had apparently been abandoned by her mother and the family brought her to the shelter in Kenosha for safe-keeping.
