Governor Scott Walker reacted Wednesday to the latest Marquette Poll, which shows the Republican incumbent’s seven-point lead over Democratic challenger Mary Burke is nearly unchanged from the previous poll, conducted in January.

The close numbers didn’t surprise Walker. “This is a state that elected me in the recall and then elected Barack Obama a few months later by about the same margin,” Walker said during an event in Wausau. “My poll numbers and the president’s have been nearly identical over the past two years, so I assume it’s going to be a tight race. It’s an evenly divided state.”

Walker leads Burke, 48 to 41 percent, in the poll of 801 registered voters. The governor held a 47 to 41 percent advantage over Burke, a former Trek Bicycle executive and state commerce secretary, in the previous Marquette Poll, taken in January.

Burke, speaking earlier Wednesday before the poll was released, also predicted a tight race.
