Governor Scott Walker says it was “perfectly fine” for his son to participate in a relative’s gay marriage ceremony last month.
Walker’s 19-year-old son Alex was an official witness June 9, during the same-sex wedding ceremony of first lady Tonette Walker’s cousin and her female partner at the Waukesha County courthouse. The governor says he knew about the ceremony, but could not attend because he was in New York at the time.
Walker, an opponent of same-sex marriage, says his son’s involvement was not about making a political statement…it was simply about showing support for a member of the family. “This is not a policy statement on his behalf, this is something where was with a family member. And it’s a family member we love dearly.”
The wedding took place during the brief window in June between when a federal judge struck down Wisconsin’s constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and then issued an order halting marriage licenses from being issued while the case is appealed.
