One of Governor-elect Scott Walker‘s cabinet picks is already drawing some partisan fire. Brett Hulsey, a Madison Democrat elected to fill the Assembly seat long held by environmentalist Representative Spencer Black, is unimpressed by Walker’s pick to head the Department of Natural Resources. “Appointing Cathy Stepp to be in charge of our health and environmental safeguards is like putting Lindsey Lohan in charge of a rehab center,” said Hulsey of Stepp, a former Republican state Senator. “Her environmental record and conservation record was under thirty percent while she served in the state Senate. It’s just unfathomable that she would be put in charge of the agency that’s supposed to protect our safety, our air and our waters.”

“Everything she is for just puts our air, our land, our water and our families at risk,” said Hulsey. “She served on the Natural Resources Board,” Walker noted. “And in the private sector she has experience in industries which are obviously very much involved with the Department of Natural Resources.” Stepp’s experience is with the trucking and home building industries. Walker added that a clean environment is are essential for the state’s agriculture and tourism. “Both of those core industries are dependent on good land, water and air, and so we’re going to continue to protect that. But we’re going to do it in a way that also balances that responsibility with making sure that we do it in a way that doesn’t devastate the state’s economy. I have every confidence that she can balance those two.” Walker announced his cabinet picks on Wednesday.
