State lawmakers were scheduled to meet in a  special session next week to take up campaign finance reform, but that action is now being delayed until January. Leaders in the Senate and Assembly say they want to hold public hearings on the reforms requested by the Governor, before they take a vote.

Jay Heck with Common Cause in Wisconsin says waiting may be a good idea, so lawmakers have time to carefully consider the proposals. Heck says starting the debate after the holidays will help keep the issue from losing momentum as well. He worries a long holiday break could make the Legislature lose focus on passing reforms. However, Heck says lawmakers do need to act by the end of January.
