Some residents on Madison’s east side likely had a sinking feeling early Friday morning when they saw their vehicles submerged in a sinkhole. It was due to a water main break at an apartment complex. Madison fire department spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster said three vehicles appear damaged beyond repair.

Some 300 residents of the complex were evacuated at around 4:30 a.m. “We’re helping people get their necessities like medications and personal possessions,” said Schuaster. “There are probabley going to be a good number of people who can’t get in overnight.”

The water main serving the complex is privately owned. The fire department is monitoring for toxins because of pavement silt and chemical sludge.
