Motorists in Waupaca County beware…a ban on using cell phones while driving is now being enforced.

Two men, one from Plover another from Kaukauna, each received citations last week for using a cell phone while driving. The officer issuing the citations says both vehicles were stopped for speeding and cell phone violations.

The County Board adopted the ordinance in November of 2008. Sheriff Brad Hardel went on record then saying officers would not enforce the ban because a lack of signage warning incoming motorists about the ordinance. Hardel says now they will make efforts to get the word out that they will be ticketing drivers who are using a cell phone.

County Chair Dick Koeppen is very much in favor of enforcing the ban and wants to see some signage for motorists entering the County. He says it’s simply a safety issue.

The fine for violating the ban is only $10. But with court, the total comes to $143.
