A 16-year-old girl was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon for allegedly bringing a handgun onto Waupaca High School grounds on Tuesday. Waupaca Police Chief Tim Goke says officers were able to obtain a description of the gun, a 40-caliber handgun, and went to the suspect’s residence, where a firearm matching the description was recovered.

Goke says the girl is being held at the Portage County Juvenile Detention Center, while charges are being forwarded to the Waupaca County district attorney’s office. School district administrator Dave Poeschl says the weapon was seen by another student outside the school building Tuesday afternoon while the female suspect was waiting for transportation.

Poeschl says at no time was there any indication the girl intended to use the weapon. Expulsion proceedings are pending.
