Wausau police shot and injured a knife-wielding man Thursday afternoon. Neighbors called police to the city's northeast side just before 1:00 PM because of a man making threatening comments.

Deputy Chief Bryan Hilts says officers tried using pepper spray to subdue the man. One officer fired one shot but Hilts says even that didn't even work. The shot "did not make the subject go down," says Hilts. "But, it did slow him down." At that point another officer fired a Taser which took the man down, and he was taken into custody.

The Marathon County Sheriff's Department and the State Patrol will help Wausau investigate the shooting. Hilts says the officers were only acting in self-defense and says the shooting appears justified. Detectives interviewed eyewitnesses Thursday afternoon. The two officers involved likely won't be interviewed for a couple days.

Police say the man likely suffered a non-life threatening injury. They plan to release his name and condition and the names of the officers later today.
