These soaring temperatures serve as a reminder to keep your pets cool. Jim Hurley with the Rock County Humane Society says water and shade are the two best ways to beat the heat. He says a dog house is not protection enough in sweltering temperatures.
Leaving a pet in your car even for a short errand can be dangerous. Hurley says a car with a window cracked can reach 102 degrees in 10 minutes, after 30 minutes it get up to 130 degrees.
Although it might be tempting to give your pets ice water during this heat wave, he advises against it. It may cause an effect similar to humans eating ice cream to fast, “brain freeze.” Licking ice cubes fine for the pet. If your pet is suffering from heat stroke, Hurley recommends applying cool towels to their head, neck and chest.
Monday kicked off what looks to be sweltering week in Wisconsin. Heat records were broken in at least a dozen cities on that day.
