With major snowstorms hitting parts of the state, it might be a good time to think about how to keep safe during severe winter weather.

While the heaviest snow will likely be in the southeastern part of the state around Milwaukee, significant accumulations are still expected across southern Wisconsin. That could leave roads a mess and make it easy for motorists to get stranded.

Lori Getter with Wisconsin Emergency Management says the best option is to not travel at all if it can be avoided. However, she says those who do need to be on the roads should pack emergency supplies such as food, blankets, and a shovel.

Otherwise, Getter says it’s a good idea to stay home until crews have the roads cleared off. While you’re preparing to wait out the storm, she suggests picking up candles, batteries, and non-perishable foods to keep at home.

For those areas expecting heavy snow, Getter suggests getting an early start on cleaning up the mess. Snowfall totals are expected to top two feet in some area and keeping up with the snow will limit the risk to your health from trying to move all of it at once with a shovel or snow blower.

The snow is expected to fall through at least Wednesday morning.
