The Department of Public Instruction has launched a new effort to make online courses available to students across Wisconsin.

DPI is partnering with the Cooperative Educational Service Agency, or CESA 9, to launch the new Wisconsin Web Academy. Assistant Superintendent Tony Evers says it will make a variety of new courses available for students, ranging from make-up classes to advanced placement courses.

Evers says the Academy offers kids a chance to take courses that may not be available in their local school district. He says small rural school districts will likely benefit most from the offerings.

Evers says the partnership with CESA 9 benefits students and the state by putting quality control standards in place. CESA 9 already operates online course, with about 1,500 students taking part statewide. Evers expects those numbers to grow in the coming school year.
