Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks has fielded plenty of criticism since coming to Milwaukee, most of it because of his inconsistency both offensively and defensively. But Weeks was the hero in friday's home opening 4-3 come from behind win over the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park.
Down by a run in the 9th, Cubs closer Kevin Gregg walked Chris Duffy with one out and Weeks hit a line drive that sailed over the head of left fielder Alfonso Soriano for a game tying RBI double. Weeks then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield groundout when he beat the tag at the plate to win it for the Brewers.
Cubs catcher Koyie Hill had given Chicago a lead with a 2-run homer. Milton Bradley also went deep for the Cubs. Corey Hart hit his first of the season for the Brewers.
The Brewers managed just 4 hits in the game, but took advantage of some walks by the Chicago bullpen. Rich Harden started and left with the lead after six innings for the Cubs. He struck out 11 Brewers on the day.
The Brewers win came before the second largest crowd in Miller Park history. 45,455 were on hand to see it in Milwaukee.
Carlos Zambrano pitches game two of the series for the Cubs tonight. Dave Bush makes his first start for the Brewers.
