It's down to the wire for filing taxes. IRS spokesman Christopher Miller says the best thing for tax filing procrastinators is e-filing . He says it's safe, convenient and, if electing direct deposit, returns could be sent within 10 days. He says individuals making less than $56,000 a year can e-file for free.

If it's down to the last minute and you still don't have time to file, Miller suggests filing an extension. Miller emphasizes you are still required to pay money owed or make arrangements by the deadline tonight even if you get an extension to file.

Payments can be made a variety of ways including mailing a check, transferring money through your tax software or by credit card.
