It wasn't long ago when the Cubs had the Brewers number and Carlos Zambrano and some of his teammates were taking digs at the Brewers after a series at Miller Park. Now who's laughing Carlos?
The only thing that could have been better than last night's 5-4 Brewers come from behind win in 12 innings over the Cubs, would have been actually beating Zambrano. But we'll save that one for later.
The Brewers clubbed three home runs, two from first baseman Prince Field, including the game winner in the top of the 12th. Pinch hitter Tony Gwynn also drove in a run in the 7th with a pinch hit single and Craig Counsell forced extra innings with his game tying single in the 8th.
Claudio Vargas struggled early, but the Brewers bullpen came to the rescue, led by Carlos Villanueva's 4-innings of scoreless relief. Villanueva picked up the win and Derrick Turnbow earned the save by closing out the bottom of the 12th.
It was the Cubs doing the laughing earlier this month, but all Carlos Zambrano has to do is check the standings. It's the Brewers up 2 1/2 on the Astros with a 12-7 mark in the first 19 games. And yes, that's the Chicago Cubs that bring up the rear at 7-12.
All of that could change a couple of weeks from now. The difference is the Brewers won't be acting like 5-year olds and rubbing somebody's nose in their every win.
The Brewers and Cubs play game two of the series tonight at Wrigley Field.
