Members of Wisconsin's congressional delegation react to an outrage in Pakistan . The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in a suicide attack is linked to the war on terror by Janesville Republican Paul Ryan : “this just goes to show that this is a global war in reach, and that the radical Islamic totalitarian movement is out to destroy democracy, and especially in Pakistan.” Ryan says it's too early to blame Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf for the death of a political rival.

But La Crosse Democrat Ron Kind says the U.S. should insist on a prompt and thorough investigation of the assassination. “We have considerable leverage,” over the Musharraf government,” says Kind. “Given the billions of dollars that we've been pumping into Pakistan since 9/11. We've been demanding full cooperation and from my perspective, I don't think we've received it.”

Both Ryan and Kind say the crucial question now is whether Musharraf allows scheduled elections to continue, or uses Bhutto's death as another pretext to clamp down on Pakistan's democracy movement.
