The Kewaunee Indians will look for a little revenge when they hook up with powerhouse Lancaster in the WIAA Division 5 State Football Championship on Thursday afternoon (4pm) at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. Lancaster beat Kewaunee in the 2001 title game.
The Lancaster Flying Arrows are tied for the most State Championships of any member program with five. They made four straight appearances in the Division 4 title game from 1999-2002. That run resulted in three consecutive titles from 2000-02 and a runner-up finish in 1999. The Flying Arrows also won the title in 1993 to account for each of their previous six appearances. They are the co-champions of the Southwest Wisconsin Conference. Lancaster erased Horicon with a 42-23 victory in the semifinal to advance to the title game. The Flying Arrows have averaged 42 points a game this season and have outscored their playoff opponents 147-44.
Kewaunee returns to the turf of Camp Randall for the first time since its only other championship game appearance in 2001 when the Indians fell to the Flying Arrows. Kewaunee routed Ladysmith 42-7 in the semifinal to earn the rematch. The Indians are the champions of the Packerland Conference. They are outscoring their opponents this year by an average of 38-8.
Lancaster is looking to defend its division 5 title after beating Somerset 17-14 last year.
