The area hardest hit by the winter storm is all but buried by blizzard-like conditions. Shawano County received as much as 18.8 inches of snow during what is hoped to be winter’s final blast. By 1:15 Wednesday morning, county plows and sheriff’s deputies had had enough. They advised the DOT and the State Patrol that all area roads in were impassable.
“We’ll find out down the road really what it (winter storm) does now to our county’s highway budget which I’m sure is going to take a big hit.” says Jerry Erdman, Shawano County Board Chairman, who adds the county workers did a “marvelous job.”
Gusting winds, heavy snow, and vehicles off the road gave Shawano County deputies a record number of incidents in a 24 hour period. The Sheriff’s Department recorded 23 pages of daily activity logs and 122 incidents.
