The winter weather may cause more problem for farmers than for their livestock. Rock County’s UW-Extension Livestock Agent Randy Thompson says the biggest concern with severe winter conditions is getting livestock out of wind and says animals likely have enough shelter to withstand the storms.
“It’s probably a bigger hardship on the operators, if you think about the potential of getting 12-or-18 inches of snow, moving that away from the livestock operation.”
Thompson includes cleaning the lots and accessing the feed, among those operations. He adds rural families don’t have the luxury of staying indoors during severe weather, instead have to meet these challenges head on.
