UW System proposes four-year tuition pledge (UNDATED)
The Universities of Wisconsin System is proposing a four-year tuition pledge aimed at giving students more predictable college costs. Under the plan, tuition would be frozen for two years beginning in the fall of 2027, with future increases capped at the rate of inflation. University leaders say the proposal depends on receiving $190 million in additional state funding through the 2027-29 biennial budget. The system is also seeking a program that would provide tuition-free education for some students from middle-income families in exchange for internships, apprenticeships, or other career-focused work experience.
Former four term mayor to run in 2027 (GREEN BAY)
Former Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt plans to run again for mayor in the April 2027 election. Following Schmitt’s announcement, Current Mayor Eric Genrich posted to X saying in part “Jim loves attention.” Schmitt said he heard about that and doesn’t “really care what he said.” Schmitt’s Monday announcement focused on homelessness, transparency in city government, improving education and more. He served as mayor from 2003-19 before deciding not to seek a fifth term. Genrich has not announced whether he’ll seek a third term.
Large fight mars Wisconsin State Fair final hours (WEST ALLIS)
A chaotic scene in the closing hours of the Wisconsin State Fair on Sunday. Milwaukee TV stations obtained video of a large fight. On Monday Wisconsin State Fair officials reported police arrested 7 people connected to the incidents. There were no serious injuries reported to fairgoers but a member of the fair security team was injured. A statement said “The incidents Sunday evening were isolated to the final hours of the Fair and are not representative of the experience our guests enjoyed throughout the event.”
DNR encouraging volunteers to teach Wisconsin’s next generation of hunters (UNDATED)
Volunteers can help teach Wisconsin’s next generation of hunters. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteer instructors to teach practical outdoor skills. Opportunities include leading hunter education classes, coordinating hands-on workshops, mentoring new hunters through Learn to Hunt programs, and helping participants build confidence in the field. The DNR is also encouraging private landowners to host educational hunts. All volunteers must pass a background check. More information is available on the DNR’s website.
Vandalized Flock camera hampers hit-and-run investigation (MERRILL)
A vandalized Flock camera hampers investigators in a Lincoln County hit-and-run crash . An unidentified man was hospitalized after being hit by a southbound vehicle along County Road K outside Merrill early Sunday morning. Officers say they were able to collect some evidence at the scene, but won’t get any help from a nearby FLOCK camera- it was recently vandalized and not in service at the time of the incident. They’re looking for a larger vehicle, possibly a pickup, that has a damaged passenger side rear-view mirror. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lincoln County Sheriff’s office, ML WSAU
