MU poll in governors race out next week, WBA debate is October 9th (UNDATED)
Post primary polling and a debate in the race for Wisconsin governor. Marquette University Law School will release results of its first statewide survey after Wisconsin’s primary elections on Wednesday, August 26. Democrat Milwaukee County Executive Daivid Crowley faces Republican 7th District Congressman Tom Tiffany in the race to succeed two-term Democratic Governor Tony Evers. The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association debate is scheduled for Friday, October 9th at 7 p.m. hosted by Milwaukee PBS with radio and television stations from across Wisconsin participating in production.
Duffy family road trip reality series now on YouTube (UNDATED)
Sean Duffy’s “Great American Road Trip” is out. The six-episode America 250 reality show features the U.S. Transportation Secretary and former Wisconsin congressman, Fox and Friends co-host Rachel Campos Duffy and their and their nine children across seven states, from Philadelphia and Boston to Arizona and Texas. The trip which was sponsored by transportation sector companies also features Duffy son-in-law Michael Alfonso, who is running for Sean Duffy’s former congressional seat being vacated by candidate for governor, Tom Tiffany. The series is available now on YouTube.
Police investigating officer over possible Flock cam misuse (MILWAUKEE)
Milwaukee police investigate another officer accused of Flock camera misuse. A police department spokesperson tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the incident involved a single use of the system last week and is not believed to be criminal. A review will determine whether department policy was violated. It’s the third misuse investigation involving Milwaukee officers. Two previous cases led to criminal charges. Meanwhile, Milwaukee police are considering reducing how long Flock data is stored, from 30 days to just seven.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign underway (UNDATED)
Law enforcement is stepping up efforts to keep impaired drivers off the road. The annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign runs now through September 7th, with State Patrol and local agencies increasing enforcement statewide. Officials say nearly 7,000 crashes involving alcohol or drugs have been reported in Wisconsin this year, accounting for about one-third of all traffic deaths. Drivers are urged to plan ahead with a designated driver or rideshare. Authorities also remind the public to call 911 if they spot a suspected impaired driver.
Storm cleanup underway in SE Wisconsin (MILWAUKEE)
Cleaning up in southeastern Wisconsin. Powerful storms caused scattered damage Tuesday evening, some of it significant. Downed trees and branches were reported in the Milwaukee area including southeastern Washington County and northeastern Waukesha County. The We Energies outage map showed more than 26,000 customers without power Wednesday morning but that number was down to just 175 by mid-afternoon. The roof was closed as rain passed over American Family Field where the Brewers routed the Seattle Mariners 22-0, while a tornado warning message flashed on the scoreboard.
BBB, FBI warn of scams involving gold bars and coins (UNDATED)
Scammers have been convincing Wisconsinites to hand over their savings in gold bars at an alarming rate. Lisa Schiller with the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin says this is a grooming scam where crooks make it seem as if they are the only people the victim can trust. In one case, the victim was strung along for three months while the scammers bled them dry of their entire life savings. Original reporting put losses at around 3 million dollars, but the F B I says 13 victims have now lost a combined 5 point 3 million dollars in Wisconsin alone.
Road rage shooting victim identified (MILWAUKEE)
The victim of a road rage shooting in Milwaukee is identified. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office identifies 44-year-old Minerva Hernandez Lopez as the victim in the midafternoon Monday shooting on the city’s south side. Video footage shared with WISN 12 News but not released publicly shows Hernandez Lopez stopping her vehicle, slowly backing up in front of the suspected shooter’s car, then driving off. That’s followed by gunfire heard off-camera, with the suspect’s vehicle speeding away and Hernandez Lopez’s car coming to a stop. She died at the scene. An 18-year-old suspect remains in custody but had not yet been formally charged on Wednesday.
