The list of Wisconsin’s official state symbols could continue to grow.  Legislation approved by the state Assembly Thursday night would designate Harley Davidson as the state’s official motorcycle.

State Representative Mark Gottlieb (R-Port Washington) was among the 40 lawmakers who voted against the bill. He says it’s nothing personal against Harley Davidson, but he worries about making a name brand product being selected as an official state symbol. He says it’s not a good policy and believes lawmakers will regret the decision.

The state already has a number of official symbols. In fact, the Assembly also approved making Lactococcus lactis the official state microbe. However, all of the other symbols are more general in nature.

The bill now heads to the state Senate.
