The state’s official 31st annual ceremony takes place in the Capitol Rotunda. Governor Scott Walker addresses the crowd, saying Martin Luther King speeches are great inspiration for the rest of us, but he believes young folks might feel a little overwhelmed. He says it’s not the public speaking that matters so much as our good deeds. “Not only the deeds of Dr. King himself, but the millions of people he inspired here, in Wisconsin, across the country and around the globe.”
Walker says we all need to examine how we treat others in each and every aspect of our lives, every day. He says that’s when we will truly carry on the dream of the slain civil rights leader. “Dr. King said that darkness can’t drive out darkness, only light can do that; and hatred cannot drive out hatred, only love can do that. The past week and a half we know that more than ever.”
Martin Luther King Day is a holiday for the state and federal governments, and many state workers have the day off.
