Two dead, one injured in shooting incident in Portage County (NEW HOPE)
Two people are dead and a third is injured after an incident in rural Portage County. Officers were called to a home in the Town of New Hope on Sunday. They found one person dead in the front yard, and another inside the home, both with gunshot wounds. A third person, who was armed, approached officers as they were investigating and did not comply with orders to drop their weapon. They were shot by a Portage County deputy and immediately treated for injuries, then taken to a local hospital. There’s been no update on their condition, the officer who fired has been placed on administrative leave. Officers from Marathon and Wood Counties will handle the investigation. Names of those involved have not been released.
Striking Mercyhealth workers may return to bargaining table by Friday (JANESVILLE)
More than 120 striking nurses and other health care workers at Mercyhealth’s East Clinic in Janesville appear set to return to the bargaining table Friday. UAW union rep Andrew Stark says the union wants to “bargain in good faith,” and Mercy readily agreed. Unionized clinic workers voted to strike last week after federal mediation for a new contract failed. Mercyhealth has declined comment beyond a letter last week that threatens to “permanently replace” striking employees if they don’t return to work.
Federal magistrate says court shouldn’t toss out case against Judge Hannah Dugan (MILWAUKEE)
The case will continue against a Milwaukee County judge accused of interfering with immigration agents. A federal magistrate judge on Monday recommended against tossing out the case against Judge Hannah Dugan. Dugan is arguing in federal court that she has prosecutorial immunity for actions taken within her purview as a judge in her own court. Magistrate Judge Nancy Joseph says that’s an issue to take up at trial, and not before. The decision is non-binding, and will head to Judge Lynn Adelman who is handling the case. A trial date has not been set.
Seven people rescued after going through locks on Mississippi River (GENOA)
Seven people had to be rescued after going through a dam and locks in western Wisconsin. W X O W reports that 6 adults and 1 child were rescued on Monday after their boat was sucked through the gates of the Genoa Lock and Dam on the Mississippi River in Vernon County. Genoa Fire Chief Mike Hanson says this was a miracle, as most people don’t survive that. Deputies remind everyone to wear their safety equipment and keep away from dams and other structures in the water.
$2 million Powerball winner in Appleton (APPLETON)
Someone in the Fox Valley is two million dollars richer. The Wisconsin Lottery says a ticket purchased at a Festival Foods in Appleton matched 5 numbers on Saturday night’s drawing, and paid for the power play option, which boosted the winnings to 2 million dollars. The winner now has 180 days to claim their prize.
