Portage County man accused of killing parents heading to trial (STEVENS POINT)
A month after being deemed competent, a Portage County man accused of killing his parents has been scheduled for trial. John Shulfer entered a not guilty plea to homicide and multiple other felony counts on Tuesday, and a judge immediately scheduled him for a two-week trial beginning March 29th. The 36-year-old is accused of killing Paula and Dale Shulfer in July 20-25, he was then shot by responding officers when he refused commands to drop his weapon, a shooting that was later determined to be justified. After recovering in a local hospital he was formally charged. Further court action has been scheduled for January, he faces a mandatory life sentence if found guilty on the homicide counts.
Madison’s police monitor makes threat as police clear encampment (MADISON)
A threat from Madison’s interim Independent Police Monitor, as unrest continues following the officer involved shooting death of a 38 year old man last month. Footage posted to Facebook shows Aeiramique (air-ah-MEEK) Glass involved in an altercation with Madison police, who were trying to clear demonstrators from the street on Tuesday. “I will burn this *expletive* city down! I will burn it down!” Glass says she was injured by police and showed off her hand, which was bleeding. Glass released a statement saying police had been obstructing her investigation by not releasing evidence related to the police shooting death of Corey Ruiz. Madison police meanwhile also released aerial footage of the altercation with Glass.
Wisconsin State Fair names 2026 Sporkies winners (WEST ALLIS)
This year’s Golden Sporkie goes to the Birria Flamin’ Bombs from the Fiesta Grill and Cantina. The fried balls are filed with birria, onion, cilantro and cheese. This year’s Drinkie award went to the Tilt-a-Spritz from the Old Fashioned Sipper Club. It’s made with grapefruit and lime with ginger beer. The State Fair opens Thursday morning in West Allis.
Mickies Dairy Bar gets new owners (MADISON)
A famous Madison breakfast spot has new owners. Mickies Dairy Bar is a popular destination for out-of-town visitors to the UW campus located across the street from Camp Randall Stadium. It’s been purchased by a group including former NFL and Badger football players. New manager Joe Gaglio says the landmark famous for its vintage décor and generous portions will receive renovations and repairs while maintaining the history of Mickies. Gaglio, a New York City native, opened Gotham Bagels off Madison’s Capitol Square nearly 20 years ago. A soft open date for Mickie’s has not been set, and Gaglio asks the community for patience while work is underway.
