UW-Madison calls for demolishing Humanities building in capital budget (MADISON)
UW Madison is once again requesting state funding to demolish an aging building. The Mosse (mossy) Humanities Building, sometimes called “The Bunker” due to its brutalist design, is crumbling on the inside and is no longer repairable according to university administrators and staff. Demolition costs of around 460-million dollars would be part of a 2-billion-dollar capital budget package for the UW. The plan is to build a new set of offices and art galleries in its place. The Madison campus also needs to increase housing with new dorms to ease overcrowding.
Crews rescue elderly man from capsized boat in Bay of Green Bay (SUAMICO)
An elderly man is rescued from the Bay of Green Bay. Rescue teams were called to the bay on Monday for a report of a capsized boat roughly 2 miles offshore in Suamico (SSWAH-mi-ko). The 81 year old man was clinging to the side of the boat. Local officials did not say if the man was injured. The US Coast Guard reminds everyone to wear their flotation and safety equipment when out on the water.
Former Menasha police officer sent to jail for misusing Flock cameras (APPLETON)
A former Menasha police officer gets jail time for misusing Flock Safety cameras. 32-year-old Cristian Morales was sentenced to six months in jail in Outagamie County Court on Monday. Prosecutors say Morales used the automated license plate reader system to monitor his ex-girlfriend in October of last year and was caught by Appleton Police when the victim said she suspected he was tracking her. Morales wrote in the Flock system access logs that the searches were for “welfare.” He was placed on administrative leave by Menasha PD when the investigation started but later resigned. As part of a plea deal, he will no longer be allowed to be a police officer.
Man who assaulted Madison protesters headed to trial (MADISON)
A man accused of punching people at an encampment set up following a fatal shooting by Madison police is headed to trial. 29 year old Joel Egbert is charged with substantial battery and disorderly conduct, with hate crime enhancers, along with bail jumping. Egbert was bound over for trial in Dane County Court Monday after he waived his preliminary hearing. The incident happened on July 29th at the encampment that was set up as a memorial for Corey Ruiz, who was shot and killed by a Madison police officer. Witnesses say Egbert kicked candles and decorations and made threats to shoot people, while using the N word.
