The attacks on America five years ago today happened on the east coast, but also affected Wisconsinites here in the Midwest. After the terrorist attacks on 9-11, Wisconsin troops were deployed to help defend the nation and its citizens. Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos reflects back to the day the planes took thousands of lives. He says we are still engaged in the war on terror and will continue to be for some time into the future. “That series of events that happened on September 11th set the course for a new set of history for our nation and the war on terrorism.”
On a positive note, Scocos says his department continues to help veterans returning home. “At the Department of Veterans Affairs, we believe we're the nation's leader and the most progressive state in taking care of our veterans concerning benefits and education and healthcare for our veterans. And we want to, through our Mission Welcome Home , help reintegrate these new veterans back into society and back into enjoying a prosperous life with their family members, and opportunity to educate themselves.”
President Bush says we're not safe yet, and Scocos says even though many soldiers are being strained after having been called back a couple times to serve overseas, we can't let our guard down as we protect our borders and our country.
NOTE:
The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs will host a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony in the State Capitol Rotunda in Madison just before 10:00 am. The ceremony will feature several prominent guest speakers, including Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton, and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin.
