An official with the Wisconsin National Guard says 30 Wisconsin soldiers who were at Fort Hood during a deadly shooting on Wednesday are safe.

Guard spokesman Paul Rickert says members of the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat based in Camp Douglas were there to train for deployment to Afghanistan. Rickert did not know exactly where the Wisconsin soldiers were located on the compound at the time of the shooting, but he says all are safe and accounted for.

Officials say an Iraq War veteran with a mental illness opened fire in a building at the Texas base Wednesday, killing three people and injuring 13 others, before turning the gun on himself. Fort Hood is the same place where 13 soldiers were killed and 32 were wounded in a 2009 shooting spree. Wisconsin figured heavily in that tragedy, when two members of a Madison unit were killed by the shooter.
