Wisconsin’s sturgeon spearing season is off to a slow start on Lake Winnebago. The state DNR reports almost 350 sturgeon were taken Saturday and Sunday on the state’s largest inland lake, and its connecting lakes up the Fox River.
That weekend take was only two-thirds of the 467 fish speared on Saturday alone last year — and water clarity on Lake Winnebago could be a factor. Spearers might just not be able to see the big fish.
The season runs for 16 days, or until each of four types of quota are reached. The DNR’s Ryan Koenigs expects the season to last the full length on Lake Winnebago — and it will likely end by the middle of this week on the up-river lakes.
