Another group of World War II veterans are on a trip of a lifetime today, visiting the memorial dedicated to them in our nation’s capital.
The 4th “Never Forgotten Honor Flight” is taking 97 north-central Wisconsin veterans to see the national World War II memorial in Washington D.C. Along the way, the group will visit the Iwo Jima memorial, and Arlington National cemetery.
“A lot of them are like eight-year-old kids on Christmas morning,” said organizer Jim Campbell.
Among those on the trip is Marshfield’s Willie Federwitz. He said, “The nice part is, it’s my birthday.”
Federwitz, 89, is traveling with his grandson Chris Berg, who is a Marshfield police officer. The youngest World War II vet is 83.
Across the country, we’re losing an average of 1,000 vets every day. There were several scheduled to go on today’s flight.
