The state's largest business group steps up its attack on the Governor's oil tax . Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce is out with an analysis that says Governor Jim Doyle's proposal would mean a seven cent increase in the gas tax. That's up from the five cents first estimated when the proposal was introduced in February.

WMC's Jeff Schoepke says the higher number is due to soaring gas prices. The tax is tied to prices and sales, not to consumption or profits. As a result, Schoepke says when the price at the pump climbs the tax will rise.

The Governor insists the state can stop oil companies from the passing on the tax to consumers. But UW Business professor Rodney Stevenson says they will pass it on and drivers will pay more.
