A Wisconsin Dells mother has temporarily lost custody of her baby and nearly lost her life during a trip to Madison to get some heroin. Sarah Dampier, 34, had her one-year-old son in the car on Tuesday afternoon after she bought the drug and then shot up in her car in a grocery store parking lot.
“It’s clear from reading the reports that she dearly loves her baby boy. But yet she saw fit to have him in the car as she drove to Madison to buy and use heroin,” says Madison Police spokesman Joel Despain.
Dampier had a companion with her, 26-year-old James Wilson also of the Dells, who noticed her becoming unresponsive and called 911. Wilson is credited with keeping the woman alive until paramedics arrived. Both are facing drug charges meanwhile the baby was turned over to foster care.
Despain says he is seeing heroin overdoses at epidemic levels in Madison.
