Food assistance organizations across Wisconsin can now apply for funding through the state’s Food Security in Wisconsin grant program, which helps connect food pantries with locally produced foods while supporting Wisconsin farmers.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, the program provides funding to organizations that purchase food directly from Wisconsin producers and processors for distribution through food assistance networks.
Program manager April Yancer said the grants help stock pantry shelves with a wide range of nutritious, locally sourced products.
“The program really works to supplement pantry shelves with fresh Wisconsin fruits and vegetables, proteins, dairy products, locally grown grains, and a lot of value-added products,” Yancer said.
State officials say the program serves a dual purpose by helping food assistance organizations meet growing demand while also creating opportunities for Wisconsin farmers to support their communities.
Yancer said one of the program’s biggest strengths is the relationship it fosters between food producers and food pantries.
“It’s also connected relationships between farmers who want to participate in supporting their communities and pantries who want to support their farmers,” she said.
The need for food assistance remains high across the state, creating challenges for organizations working to keep shelves stocked with healthy options. Yancer said many food assistance providers are struggling to meet increasing demand while ensuring access to nutritious and culturally relevant foods.
“One of the biggest challenges facing food assistance organizations throughout the state is meeting the increased need of services and sourcing foods that meet that increased need,” Yancer said.
Applications for the Food Security in Wisconsin grant program are now being accepted. State officials encourage interested pantry networks and food assistance organizations to connect with statewide partners and visit the DATCP website for additional information.
