This has not been a good year for many farmers in Wisconsin. For many farmers in the state, 2009 has been a “very difficult year,” according to UW Ag Agent David Fischer.
“You could say memorable in all the bad ways,” Fischer says of the year now drawing to a close. The year began with a wet spring, headed into a cold July, featured a rainy October, and heavy December snow which put an end to the harvest.
It’s going to be a winter of decision-making on the farm, in Fischer’s opinion. “I think there are some producers out there that are definitely going to be having to reevaluate their finances over the winter . . . and make some tough decisions as to where they want to go, how much more they want to continue.”
