Brewers beat Giants, opening day is approaching

Yovani Gallardo outlasted Tim Lincecum in a matchup of opening day starters

Yovani Gallardo

as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants 7-4.

Gallardo worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and eight hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Gallardo will pitch the season opener against the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park.

Rickie Weeks had a pair of doubles and Ryan Braun lined a 2-run double down the line in left to give the Brewers a 5-4 lead.

The Brewers improved to 14-14-2 in Cactus League play with the win.  They’ll face the White Sox today.

Fielder powers Brewers to win

Prince Fielder clubbed three home runs, the last of which, a 2-run shot in

Prince Fielder

the 7th to break a 4-4 tie and power the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Fielder now has 38 home runs for the season, tying him with Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL lead.  His 120 runs batted in left him three shy of tying Kemp for the NL lead.

Rickie Weeks also clubbed his 20th homer in the win.  His 470 foot shot kept the Brewers 1-game in front of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the #2 seed in the National League Playoffs.  The Brewers still need to win tonight, or get Arizona to lose its final game, to assure the Brewers lock up the #2 seed. Marcum leads Brewers past Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers inched closer to their first division title in 29 years by beating the Chicago Cubs 5-1 at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.

Shaun Marcum threw eight strong innings, allowing 1-run on 5 hits with no walks and 7-strikeouts to pick up his 13th win (13-7) of the season.  Marcum also helped his own cause when he doubled and scored a run.

Rickie Weeks drove in two runs and Nyjer Morgan reached base three times, stole a base and scored two runs to help the Brewers reach 91 wins for the first time since 1992.

The Brewers magic number fell to 3, any combination of Brewer wins or Cardinal defeats totaling 3, will clinch the National League Central division.

Braun returns as Milwaukee blasts Arizona

The Brewers hit five home runs as the crushed the Diamondbacks Tuesday night 11-3 at Chase Field in Arizona.  Ryan Braun was back in the line-up after missing that last two games with a leg injury.  It was just the 4th time in the last 14-games for the Brewers that Braun was able to play since injuring his leg July 2nd in Minnesota.

Braun had one of three Milwaukee home runs in the first inning.  The two-run shot was Braun’s 17th of the season.  Corey Hart lead off the game with his 13th of the year.  Hart hopes the Brewers can build on Tuesday:

Brewers earn a split in Colorado

After dropping the first two-games of their four-game set in Colorado, the Brewers battled back to win the final two-games including Sunday’s 4-3 nail-bitter over the Rockies at Coors Field.

Shaun Marcum earned the win giving up 2-runs on 4-hit but he lasted only 5-innings.  Marcum left the game after taking his warm-up tosses in the 6th with a neck injury he suffered making  a high-light reel diving play on the infield.  After the game, Marcum said he didn’t expect to miss a start.

John Axford closed the door in the 9th for his 25th save of the year and 22nd straight without blowing one.  The 9th did hold some drama.  Colorado plated an unearned run to cut the lead to one.  With the tying run at 2nd and winning run at 1st, Axford struck-out Rockies All-Star SS Troy Tulowitzki to end the game.
