Packers look to win a title without David Bakhtiari

January 2, 2021 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

The Green Bay Packers have shuffled the deck on their offensive line all season long.  They’ll have to do it again on Sunday against the Chicago Bears, as well as the playoffs and even well into next season too after losing left tackle David Bakhtiari with a torn ACL.

The first team All-Pro tackle suffered the injury in practice on Thursday and comes just six weeks after Bakhtiari signed a contract extension that made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the history of the game.

The Packers are expected to move Billy Turner to left tackle and Elgton Jenkins to right tackle, if Rick Wagner isn’t ready to return.  If Wagner can play, then Elgton Jenkins would likely remain at left guard and Lucas Patrick at right guard.  If Wagner isn’t ready, then rookie Jon Runyan and Lucas Patrick would likely man the guard positions.

If the Packers beat the Bears on Sunday, they’ll secure the top overall seed in the NFC playoffs which will include a first round bye.  That will give the Packers more time to prepare their offensive line for a Super Bowl run.

Packers Use Home Field To Crush Titans

December 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

#28 AJ Dillon

The Green Bay Packers showed the rest of the NFL what they could be in store for if the NFC playoffs come through Lambeau Field in their entirety.

A day that was filled with snow and cold, the Packers dominated the Tennessee Titans 40-14, improving to 12-3 on the season.  The Packers are one win away on Sunday afternoon in Chicago to clinch a first round bye and top billing in the NFC playoffs.

The Packers played their most complete game of the season, racking up 448 yards of offense and seeing their defense hold Titans running back Derek Henry under 100-yards (98 yards) with no touchdowns.  Henry entered the game with a league best 1,679 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill was just 11 of 24 for 121 yards and a touchdown and threw a pair of interceptions.

Aaron Rodgers wasn’t bothered by the snow and cold at all.  In fact, he embraced it, on the way to a four touchdown day.  Rodgers completed 21 of 25 for 231 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.  Three of his four scoring strikes went to Davante Adams, who finished with 11 receptions for 142 yards. Former Packers Assistant Kevin Greene Dies At 58

December 22, 2020 By Bill Scott

Kevin Greene

The Green Bay Packers and the rest of the NFL community is mourning the death of Hall of Fame linebacker Kevin Greene.  He passed away Monday at the age of 58.  No cause of death was given.

Greene was a fifth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 1985 and played 15 seasons in the NFL for the Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers.

Greene was a five-time Pro Bowl selection, a three-time All-Pro, and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1996.  He finished his career with 160 sacks, which ranks third in league history behind only Bruce Smith and Reggie White.  That total also ranks first among linebackers.

Greene joined the Green Bay Packers as their outside linebackers coach in 2009 and coached through the 2013 season.  He helped the Packers win Super Bowl 45.  He also coached again briefly for the New York Jets in 2017-18.

Greene joined the NFL Hall of Fame in 2016, the same year as former Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

Packers Have Seven Players Voted To 2020 NFC Pro Bowl Team

December 22, 2020 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

The Green Bay Packers had seven players named to the 2020 NFC Pro Bowl team on Monday.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers headlines the squad as the starting quarterback.  It marks the ninth Pro Bowl selection of his career, tying Brett Favre and the late Forrest Gregg for the most Pro Bowl selections as a Packer.  Rodgers leads the league in passer rating (118.0), passing touchdowns (40) and fewest interceptions thrown (four – min. 350 pass attempts).

Davante Adams was voted to his fourth straight NFC Pro Bowl squad, making him only the second Packers WR to earn four-plus consecutive Pro Bowls.  James Lofton made six straight appearances from 1980-85.  Adams leads the league in receptions per game (8.2) and receiving yards per game (98.8) and ranks No. 2 in receiving TD’s with 14.  He posted those numbers despite missing 2+ games because of injury.

David Bakhtiari earned his third trip to the Pro Bowl and his second straight as an original selection.  He’s joined by fellow offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins, who earned his first selection.  Jenkins became the Packers first offensive lineman to start a game at guard, center and tackle in the same season since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Packers Fast Start Is Enough To Beat Carolina

December 20, 2020 By Bill Scott

Aaron Jones

Aaron Jones rushed 20 times for 145 yards and a touchdown to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 24-16 win over the Carolina Panthers on Saturday night at Lambeau Field.

The Packers scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and jumped out to a 21-3 halftime lead.  But they managed just three points and 49 total offensive yards in the second half and held off the Panthers to improve to 11-3 on the season.

Mason Crosby sealed the victory with a 51-yard field goal to put the Packers up two scores with 3:39 left to play.  Crosby is a perfect 16-for-16 in the field goal department this season.

At the moment, the path to the Super Bowl still goes through Lambeau Field, but the Packers will need to win one of their two remaining games to clinch home field advantage throughout.

The Packers host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday night at Lambeau Field and then finish up at Chicago against the rival Bears.

Aaron Rodgers passed for just 143 yards and a touchdown, completing 20 of 29 passes.   He also rushed for a touchdown.  The touchdown pass was the 40th of the season for Rodgers, who became the only quarterback in NFL history to pass for 40 or more touchdowns three times.

Davante Adams had seven catches but totaled just 42 yards.

Packers Clinch NFC North Title With Win At Detroit (AUDIO)

December 14, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up their second straight NFC North Division title with Sunday’s 31-24 win over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.  The win also put the Packers in position to secure the top seed in the NFC, after the New Orleans Saints were upset  by the Philadelphia Eagles .  The Packers and Saints are tied for the top record in the conference at 10-3, but the Packers own the tiebreaker because of a week three win over the Saints in New Orleans.

Unlike last year, there’s no bye for the No. 2 seed this year, which is why the top seed in each conference is so important.  Only the top team in each league gets the opening week of the playoffs off.

Aaron Rodgers passed for 290 yards and three touchdowns, giving him 39 for the season, with a quarterback rating of 119.7.  Rodgers moved into fourth place in NFL history in games with three or more TD passes, with 73, passing former teammate Brett Favre.  He also passed and rushed for a touchdown in the same game for the 26th time in his career. Packers Will Continue Without Fans

December 9, 2020 By Bill Scott

Packers fans against the Eagles

The Green Bay Packers will play the rest of the regular season without fans at Lambeau Field.  The team announced on Tuesday that they will limit themselves to around 500 Packers employees and their household families.

COVID infection rates are trending in a better direction in Brown County, but remain too high overall, forcing the Packers into the decision to move forward without fans.

The approach to any potential home playoff games(s) will be decided at a later date. [Read more…]

Rodgers, Adams lead Packers past Eagles

December 7, 2020 By Bill Scott

Packers RB Aaron Jones

Aaron Rodgers passed for 295 yards and three touchdowns and Davante Adams caught 10 passes for 121 yards and two scores to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 30-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

The second of Adams two touchdown catches was a 9-yard, catch and run, stiff-arming Eagles corner Darius Slay for the final five yards, was the 400th of Rodgers career.  The Packers superstar signal caller became the quickest quarterback in NFL history to reach 400 career touchdown passes, reaching the milestone in his 193rd game.  New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees needed 205 games to reach 400.

Rodgers three touchdown passes gives him 36 for the season, his fifth season with at least 35 touchdown passes.  No other quarterback in NFL history has accomplished that feat.

Rodgers doesn’t have any of his previous century-mark touchdown balls.  Hours before kickoff, Adams made sure all of the receivers/running backs knew that the game ball used for 400, would go right to Rodgers.

Adams, who finished with 997 receiving yards for the second time in his career last season, surpassed the 1,000 yard mark to go along with 13 touchdowns and still has four more games left in the regular season.  To make those numbers even more impressive, Adams missed 2 1/2 games with an ankle injury. Packers release Shepherd, sign Austin

December 2, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers made it official, releasing receiver Darrius Shepherd on Tuesday, making room for newly signed wide receiver/returner Tavon Austin.  Austin was the eighth overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Shepherd started the season on the Packers practice squad before being signed to the active roster on Sept. 26.  He had just five receptions for 46 yards and had a costly fumble on a kickoff return in the teams loss at Indianapolis.  He could still be added back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Austin will be eligible to practice with the Packers on Wednesday.

Packers rout Bears for 100th win in series (AUDIO)

November 30, 2020 By Bill Scott

After falling to the Colts in Indianapolis a week earlier, the Green Bay Packers bounced back to dominate their NFC North Division rivals, the Chicago Bears, pulling out a 41-25 win at Lambeau Field.

The Packers became the first team to reach 100 wins in the longtime rivalry and now boast a 100-95-6 record in the series.

Aaron Rodgers completed 21 of 29 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns, giving him 20 of the wins at quarterback in the series with the Bears.  The four touchdown passes went to four different receivers, Davante Adams, Robert Tonyan, Allen Lazard and Marcedes Lewis.

Rodgers surpassed 50,000 passing yards during the game, becoming the 11th quarterback in league history to reach that milestone. [Read more…]
