A third period rally came up short for the Wisconsin men’s hockey team (2-2-0, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) as they dropped the second game of the weekend series 8-5 against Boston College (2-2, 0-0-0-0 Hockey East).

The Badgers fell behind 6-2 in the second period, but rallied to pull within one at 6-5.  But forced to pull their goaltender, the Badgers saw the Eagles score a pair of empty net goals to pull out the win.

The Badgers got third period goals from Cameron Hughes, Grant Besse and Ryan Wagner to pull within a goal.

Wisconsin killed off all six Boston College power plays and didn’t allow a power play goal in the series.  They are now 21-for-23 on the penalty kill, good for a 91 percent efficiency. [Read more…]

Two Wisconsin Badgers were selected in the 2015 NHL Draft over the weekend.

Freshman goaltender Luke Opilka went in the fifth round, 146th overall, to his home town St. Louis Blues.

Opilka is the first drafted goaltender on its roster since Brett Bennett wrapped up his UW career in 2011.  All-time, 12 Badger goaltenders have been selected in NHL drafts, though that number increases to 13 when the old NHL supplemental draft is included.  Seven Badger goaltenders have played in the NHL, including current St. Louis Blues goalie Brian Elliott.

Opilka played last season for the U.S. Under-18 Team as part of the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He went 25-7-0 with a 2.77 goals-against average, .833 save percentage and three shutouts.  One of those victories included a 4-1 victory over the Badgers at the Kohl Center last December.

Wisconsin Sophomore forward Cameron Hughes, tied for the Badgers’ freshman scoring lead last season, posting 3 goals and 13 points in 34 games.  He was selected in the 6th round by the Boston Bruins.

Hughes is just the second Badger to get picked by the Bruins, joining 1985 11th-round pick John Byce, who went 220th to Boston.

With the picks of Opilka and Hughes, 151 Badgers have now been chosen in the NHL draft.

Hockey Badgers miss out on first Big Ten win

February 1, 2015 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers scored a goal nine seconds into the game, but allowed a goal with two seconds left in regulation and settled for a 4-4 tie against the rival Minnesota Gophers at the Kohl Center on Saturday night.

The Badgers (2-16-4, 0-6-2-2 Big Ten) grabbed an extra point in the Big Ten standings with the shootout victory, outscoring Minnesota 3-2 in seven rounds.  But they remain without a victory in Big Ten play.

Freshman Ryan Wagner scored the first goal of the game, nine seconds in.  It was his first career goal and it tied Gary Winchester (1973) and Steve Reinprecht (1999) for the fastest goal to start a game for UW.

Freshman Cameron Hughes also scored his first career goal, giving the Badgers a 4-3 lead with a power-play goal at 18:47 of the third period.

Sophomore Grant Besse scored his fifth goal in four games against Minnesota this season.

Badger goaltender Joel Rumpel made 42 saves, while succeeding on five of seven shots in the shootout.

The Badgers will play four of their next five games on the road, beginning with a 2-game series next weekend at Penn State.
