The Milwaukee Brewers salvaged the final game of their three game series with Cincinnati, but they lost another starting pitcher in the process.

Yasmani Grandal’s two-run single capped a three-run fifth inning as the Brewers pulled out a 5-4 win.

Matt Albers picked up the win and Freddy Peralta notched his first save.

Josh VanMeter went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Cincinnati, which had won three of its previous four.

Reds blank Brewers in series opener

May 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

Keston Huira’s first game at Miller Park

Milwaukee Brewers starter Gio Gonzalez surrendered three runs in the first inning and the Cincinnati Reds made that hold up.  The Reds pulled out a 3-0 victory in the series opener on Tuesday night at Miller Park.  It’s the first time the Brewers have been blanked on the scoreboard this season.

Sonny Gray blanked the Brewers for six innings, striking out nine and securing his first win of the season.  Three Reds relievers finished the victory for Gray as the Brewers went down via the strikeout 14 times on the night.  They were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.

Right-fielder Christian Yelich was scratched from the lineup before the game with back spasms.  He’s not in the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale either.

The Brewers best chance came in the first inning when Lorenzo Cain led off the inning with a double. [Read more…]

Gio Gonzalez gave up a solo homer in the first inning, but then held the Philadelphia Phillies in check through 5 1/3 innings as the Milwaukee Brewers pulled out a 5-2 win in Philadelphia.

Jesus Aguilar singled in two runs, and Ryan Braun had two hits and an RBI in the win.

Jean Seguara homered in the first for the Phillies.  Jake Arrieta surrendered five runs over six innings to fall to 4-4 with the loss.

The Phillies have lost two straight, while the Brewers have won two straight and nine of their last 12.

Zach Davies pitches for the Brewers in the series finale against the Phillies this afternoon.

Anderson to start Saturday

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Chase Anderson will start Saturday in Atlanta, in the rotation spot currently held by Freddy Peralta.

Anderson is returning from a minor-league rehab outing at Triple “A” San Antonio after he missed a start due to a blister in Milwaukee.  Peralta pitched against the Phillies on Monday but made it through just four innings because of a high pitch count.

Woodruff leads Brewers to sixth straight win

May 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

Brandon Woodruff allowed just one run and four hits to the Washington Nationals over six innings, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon.  Woodruff struck out nine and didn’t walk anybody as he improved to 5-1.  His ERA dropped from 5.81 to 4.25.

The Brewers moved seven games over .500 (23-16) as they pulled to within a half game of the division leading Cubs.  Milwaukee went 8-2 on their 10-game home stand.

Christian Yelich had three hits, including his league-leading 16th home run of the season.  Fifteen of his 16 home runs have come at Miller Park.

Matt Albers surrendered a pair of runs in the seventh inning and the Nationals had enough runners aboard in the ninth to create a save situation for closer Josh Hader, slammed the door on his 10th save of the season.

The Brewers are off on Thursday and will head to Chicago for the start of a three game series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday.  Gio Gonzalez (0-0, 2.61 ERA) pitches for the Brewers.  Jose Quintana (4-1, 3.40) will go for the Cubs.

Brewers fall, Yelich is sidelined

April 29, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series finale in New York against the Mets on Sunday, 5-2 at Citi Field.  In the process, star Christian Yelich had to leave the game in the fourth inning with lower back discomfort that he sustained while running the bases.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he didn’t think Yelich’s issue was series enough to think about the injured list but thought it would likely keep him out of tonight’s series opener against Colorado at Miller Park.

After trailing 2-0, Mike Moustakas clubbed a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game 2-2. [Read more…]

Gonzalez came to the Brewers in a late season trade with the Washington Nationals, going 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in five September starts.

Brewers make roster moves prior to game 5 of NLCS

October 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

Dodger Stadium hosting Game 5 of the NLCS.

The Milwaukee Brewers removed left-handed pitcher Gio Gonzalez from their NLCS playoff roster after he suffered a high left ankle sprain in the second inning of Tuesday night’s 2-1 loss in 13-innings to the L.A. Dodgers.

Taking Gonzalez spot on the roster is right-handed pitcher Zach Davies, who hasn’t pitched since September 28 and has pitched just 23 innings dating back to May 29.  Davies hasn’t won a game since April 24.

Gonzalez was hurt just one pitch into the second inning, twisting his ankle while trying to field a comebacker off the bat of Yasiel Puig.

Gonzalez was acquired from the Washington Nationals on Aug. 31 and went 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA and WHIP of 0.95 in five regular-season starts for the Brewers.  He is set to become a free agent following the season and it’s expected that he will not return to the Brewers.

Wade Miley makes the start in Game 5 of the NLCS for the Brewers.  Clayton Kershaw gets the nod at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Brewers fall to Dodgers in 13 innings, series tied 2-2

October 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich is hitting just .188 in the NLCS.

It took 13-innings before the Los Angeles Dodgers delivered the game winner to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 and even the NLCS at two-games apiece.

Cody Bellinger’s two-out single off Junior Guerra drove in Manny Machado with the game winner.

Guerra was the final of seven pitchers used by the Brewers.  Brewer pitchers allowed eight hits in 13 innings and struck out a postseason franchise-record 17 Dodgers.

Guerra was in his fourth inning of relief and retired the first batter before Manny Machado singled to left.  He moved to second on a wild-pitch and scored in Bellinger’s two-out single to right.

The game took 5 hours and 15 minutes to play, the second-longest NLCS game ever.

The two teams combined to use 16 pitchers and went a combined 2 for 18 with runners in scoring position, stranding a total of 21 base runners.

Bellinger also robbed Lorenzo Cain of an extra base hit in the 10th inning when he made a diving catch in right field.

Cain finished 0 for 6 with three strikeouts.  He’s hitting just .200 in the series.  Christian Yelich went 1 for 5 and is hitting just .188 in the series. [Read more…]
